Job Description
The Scripps Howard Foundation is seeking an experienced, energetic Manager of Community Giving to join a small team of dedicated professionals. This is a hands-on position with responsibility for managing corporate giving across multiple markets, including book distributions for our annual childhood literacy efforts, grantmaking, and our employee matching gift program. We are seeking a self-motivated individual with a record of success in project development and management across multiple markets and constituents; excellent interpersonal, oral/written communication, and ability to deliver with excellence on co-occurring priorities. The ideal candidate also will have some experience in childhood literacy and managing corporate giving through grantmaking and employee matching gift programs. This position will be in Cincinnati, OH, with some travel (10-15%) required, and will report to the Director of Philanthropic Strategies.
Primary Purpose: The Manager of Community Giving directs, develops and manages programs and investment strategies for Scripps Howard Foundation’s Community Giving using the SHF Strategic Plan as guidance. The manager serves as the Foundation’s expert on childhood literacy, social issues and non-profit trends, cultivating and maintaining relationships with local and national non-profit leaders and Scripps business leaders.
Primary Responsibilities:
Leadership and Strategic Initiatives:
- Manage team of board, corporate, and external representatives to define the Foundation’s community giving strategy and to drive the Community Giving Initiative of the SHF Strategic Plan.
- Maintain a high level of expertise regarding childhood literacy, social issues and community initiatives; methods to heighten impact; and trends in grant making.
- Cultivate a network of relationships with partners (internal and external) and thought leaders across the grant-making and non-profit landscape, with a special emphasis on childhood literacy.
- Provide research, reports, analysis, insights and recommendations to Foundation leadership regarding trends, changes and opportunities in grant making related to issues of interest to the Foundation. Provide updates and presentations to leadership on Community Giving activities.
- Evaluate and continuously improve programs and projects to advance the Foundation’s Community Giving initiatives, emphasizing opportunities to sharpen the childhood literacy focus.
- Represent the Foundation in community groups, associations and collaborations.
Childhood literacy
- Develop, plan and manage philanthropic efforts across multiple markets nationwide, orchestrating book distributions and other literacy efforts of local and national brands, colleagues, volunteers, partners and vendors.
- Develop and maintain relationships and partnerships to advance the Foundation’s childhood literacy focus.
- Work closely with the Director of Philanthropic Strategies to support fundraising efforts for “If you give a child a book…” campaign.
- Work closely with Director of Philanthropic Stategies, Corporate Communications, and station/brand leaders to promote the literacy campaign and the importance of childhood literacy internally and externally.
Grant making
- Working with committees and leadership as appropriate, lead grant-making in the Bob Scripps Community Fund and the Scripps Charitable Fund, from strategy to execution, using the SHF Strategic Plan as a guide for overall direction.
- Maintain strong relationships with station and brand leaders to ensure local grant-making is effective and well publicized.
- Work closely with communication staff to inform and educate employees regarding opportunities to apply for funds, support the Foundation, etc.
- Manage grant-making processes as appropriate for each fund, including:
- requests for proposals
- grant submission and review process
- recommendation and approval process
- timely payment of grants
- outcomes
Other
- Gather, generate, and share with communication and fundraising staff stories, outcomes, photos and other materials to publicize our Community Giving impact.
- Work closely with the Director of the Journalism Fund and the Foundation team to assist in the planning and execution of the Scripps Howard Awards.
- Assist in preparation of and oversee Community Giving budget.
- Assist with planning and materials for Board meetings, as related to Community Giving.
Education and Experience/Certifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree
- 5 or more years of relevant experience in non-profit area, grant-making, childhood literacy, advocacy or other areas related to the SHF’s mission.
Skills and Abilities:
- Passion and vision for addressing social issues and building better communities; experience or knowledge of childhood literacy a plus
- Strategic, innovative and future-oriented thinker and planner
- Ability to collaborate and build partnerships effectively with people from multiple backgrounds, organizations, associations, etc.
- Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills
- Self-motivated leader with demonstrated ability to plan, organize and evaluate programs, projects, and events
- Highly organized with attention to detail; experience managing co-occurring priorities while ensuring timely delivery of high-quality work.
- Ability to create and manage project plans for small to mid-size projects; comfortable in highly collaborative environments as well as in self-starting, self-driven tasks.
- Effective written and oral communicator
- Proficiency with Microsoft 365 applications – Outlook, PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Sharepoint – preferred.
- 10%-15% travel.
